چکیده

This paper reports on the development of novel Ti-doped 3D carbon fibre composites (CFCs) and their performance when exposed to transient thermal loads (disruptions) in the electron beam facility JUDITH at different conditions. Depending on the applied load, the CFCs showed three steps of erosion: 1) breaking of PAN fibres with pull out from the surface; 2) cracking and ablation of pitch fibres close to the interface of PAN/pitch fibre-bundles; 3) finally, erosion of pitch fibres in the centre of the bundle. The addition of titanium carbide resulted in a significant improvement in thermal shock behaviour of these materials compared to their undoped counterparts. ∗ C. 3D FEA Modelling of Laminated Composites in Bending and Their Failure Mechanisms

This paper developed three-dimensional (3D) Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to investigate the effect of fibre lay-up on the initiation of failure of laminated composites in bending. TsaiHill failure criterion was applied to identify the critical areas of failure in composite laminates. In accordance with the 3D FEA, unidirectional ([0]16), cross-ply ([0/90]4s) and angle-ply ([±45]4s) laminates m...

Air Plasma Sprayed Bond Coat Oxidation Behavior and its Resistance to Isothermal and Thermal Shock Loading

An experimental investigation was conducted to find the effect of spraying method of coating of Thermal Barrier Coatings (TBCs) on their oxidation behaviour and resistance to various thermal loading. Isothermal and thermal shock tests were performed in order to study oxidation behaviour of air plasma sprayed Bond Coat (BC) and assess its effect on TBCs lifetime under the stated loadings. Specim...

Structure and Photocatalytic Properties of Mn-Doped TiO2 Loaded on Wood-Based Activated Carbon Fiber Composites

Mn-doped TiO₂ loaded on wood-based activated carbon fiber (Mn/TiO₂-WACF) was prepared by sol-gel and impregnation method using MnSO₄·H₂O as manganese source. The structure of Mn/TiO₂-WACF was characterized by SEM, XRD, FTIR, N₂ adsorption and UV-Vis, and its photocatalytic activity for methylene blue degradation was investigated. Results show that Mn-doped TiO₂ were loaded on the surface of woo...

Influence of fibre-matrix interface on the fracture behaviour of carbon-carbon composites

This paper studies the fracture behaviour of unidirectional carbon fibre reinforced carbon matrix composites and its relation with the type of fibre-matrix interface developed in the composite. Model unidirectional carbon-carbon composites were prepared using the same type of fibre and different pitches as matrix precursors. These included both commercial pitches and synthesized in the laborato...
